Toshikazu Kawaguchi’s Before the Coffee Gets Cold is a heartwarming and thought-provoking tale that invites readers into a quaint Japanese coffee shop with a peculiar twist.Time traveling!! Set in a timeless setting, the novel explores the complexities of human relationships, the power of memory, and the enduring nature of love.

I was totally burnt out from all the reading and assignments for college. But this little book, Before the Coffee Gets Cold, was a total lifesaver. It’s like stepping into a warm, comfy cafe on a cold day. The simple, nostalgic setting hinted at a heartwarming tale, and I was so right! . This book was like a cosy blanket on a chilly day, wrapping me up in its charming world.

The premise is simple: a quaint Japanese cafe with a secret. One particular chair that has the power to send its occupants back in time, but only for a short while, until their coffee turns cold .It’s a bit like a time machine for your coffee break.

The stories that unfold are both heartbreaking and heartwarming. There’s a guy who goes back to tell his wife he loves her one last time, a woman who tries to fix a mistake from her past, and a couple who rekindles their love. Each tale is a poignant and sentimental  exploration of regret, longing, and the enduring power of human connection.

What I love most about this book is the way it captures the magic of everyday moments. The cafe itself is like a character, a timeless place where people can escape from their worries and find a bit of peace. The characters are relatable and well-developed given that this is such a short read-130 pages?-, making it easy to root for them and feel their emotions.

One of my favourite parts is the way the time travel mechanic is used. It’s not about changing the past, but about cherishing the moments we have. It’s a reminder that even the smallest things can have a profound impact on our lives.

Beyond the heartwarming stories and the magical setting, Before the Coffee Gets Cold also offers a thoughtful exploration of the human condition. It delves into themes of love, loss, regret, and the passage of time. The book is a reminder that it’s never too late to make amends, to say what you mean, and to cherish the people you love.

If you’re looking for a cosy, heartwarming read with a touch of magic, Before the Coffee Gets Cold is definitely worth checking out. It’s a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of everyday life. And who knows, maybe you’ll even find yourself longing for a cup of coffee and a chance to travel back in time.

FINAL VERDICT This book has a nice nostalgic vibe to it . Something magical about it.I’m a sucker for a good cover, and Before the Coffee Gets Cold totally hooked me.The time-travel thing was a bit weird at first, but it totally worked as I delved deeper into the book do  Id rate this book a solid ⅘. It was my first step into Japanese literature and boy what an experience!
