Shogran Valley holds a special place in my heart, not just because of its breathtaking beauty, but because of the memories and experiences I’ve had there. While it is true that there are different, similarly stunning places in Pakistan, there is something about Shogran that continues drawing me in again and again, even as it becomes more crowded through the years.

One of the matters that units Shogran apart for me is its wonderful natural beauty. The lush greenery, the majestic mountains, and the tranquil surroundings create an atmosphere  of peace and serenity that is unmatched. Whether I’m trekking through the verdant forests or truly taking in the panoramic views from a relaxed guesthouse, there is always within me, a feel of awe and wonder that in no way fails to captivate me.

But beyond its physical beauty, what actually makes Shogran unique are the people I’ve encountered there. From the warm greetings of the locals to the hospitality of the guest house proprietors, I’ve always been made to feel welcome and at home in Shogran. There’s an experience of unity and togetherness that permeates the valley, and it’s this feeling of connection that makes me revisit  time and time again.

Whether it’s sharing stories over a cup of chai with fellow travelers or hanging up a verbal exchange with a shepherd tending his flock, there is constantly an experience of kinship and belonging in Shogran valley. It’s a place where strangers quickly become friends, and where the simple pleasures of life take on a unique importance.

Exploring the Charm of Shogran Valley: A Personal Reflection

And regardless of how regularly I visit, there is always something new to discover , making every trip seem like a homecoming of sorts. So yes, while there may be other places in Pakistan which can be similarly breathtaking, for me, Shogran valley will always hold a unique place in my heart. Let me share with you one  of my many experiences of generosity and kindness.

It was October of 2021,  and curfew was finally lifted. We were among the first people to embark on a plane  journey, when the city was still nestled in the comfort of their homes , reluctant to get out because of COVID. We were reluctant too at fist but our thirst for an adventure in the wilderness was far greater and so here we were in the middle of a hotel in Shogran, with all its quietness and a washed-away trekking track  just behind our hotel. A lethal combination you will soon come to know. But right then it was heaven for us. And so we decided to check the trail as soon as we freshened up. Without a guide, how bad could it be?

However, amidst the vastness of Shogran Valley, fate had a special plan in store for me. A second of distraction and I was off track from my own family, all disoriented and alone within a span of a few inattentive minutes. Panic began overtaking me as the gravity of my situation settled in. I was lost and I had no cellphone., I felt the burden of my vulnerability bundle upon me like a heavy cloud.

“Assalamualaikum” It was in this moment of uncertainty that the gentle greeting of a young Pashtun girl pierced through the silence, momentarily startling me from my thoughts. wrapped in a vibrant green shawl and with a staff in hand, she stood behind me an aura of resilience and quiet strength. Behind her, a flock of sheep trailed by  faithfully.

With hesitant phrases and a broken Urdu accent, she said her greetings  of peace.”Walaikumassalam” I greeted back, already feeling a sense of kinship towards this considerate stranger.  In her large almond eyes, I saw a reflection of the rugged beauty of Shogran Valley, an intensity of knowledge born from a life-time spent amidst its majestic peaks and verdant valleys. Despite the language barrier between us, her warmth and sincerity bridged the gap between us. Her just standing there and staring at me was enough to replace my dread with reassurance. Everything will be alright, alright.

It wasn’t long before our journey led us to a poignant reunion with my frantic own family, their relief palpable as they enveloped me into a hug. Amidst happy tears and heartfelt embraces, I was introduced to Gul Nawab-the father of the younger female -who had turned out to be my surprising saviour by means of helping my family  reach where I was.

Gul Nawab was a security guard at a local neighborhood school. He welcomed us into his home for a cup of tea. We were hesitant in the beginning, but with his insistence ,he left us no other choice but to agree . His generosity and hospitality , a testimony to the warmth of the people of Shogran Valley. As we ascended the mountain to his home, nestled amidst a landscape of lush greenery and wildflowers, the beauty of Shogran Valley spread out before us in all its beauty.

In the intimate confines of Gul Nawab’s home, we  were greeted by his wife and elder daughter, their smiles radiant with kindness and generosity. Despite their modest means, they welcomed us with open hearts, giving us the whole lot they had-even though they didn’t have much-with unwavering hospitality. As we shared stories and laughter over steaming cups of tea and hot pakoras, the bond forged amidst the region of Shogran Valley grew stronger with every passing second.

Before bidding us farewell, Gul Nawab’s wife presented me and my sister homemade bracelets meticulously crafted from wooden beads intricately carved with designs and fish wire. Her skill and dedication were evident in every detail of her handiwork. Not only did she sell bracelets, but also hand woven purses in the bustling Shogran Bazar, nestled in the heart of Shogran city.

As we descended from the heights of Shogran Valley, the memories of our stumble upon Gul Nawab and his small family lingered like a candy chorus, a testimony to the indelible mark left by way of the kindness of strangers in our lives. In the heart of Shogran Valley, surrounded by its high mountains and lush green valleys  , I found more than just the thrill I was looking for. I also discovered the deep beauty of human connection that goes beyond borders and languages. Shogran Valley, with its amazing beauty, green landscapes, pleasant weather, and many other features, holds a special place in my heart because of my experiences there and the people who made me feel so welcome.
